Amazon is good with hardware tablets for reading and even viewing video. However, what's under the hood, CPU power, memory, etc I find truly lacking. Make sure you first allow Chrome to install from unknown sources then once the Amazon Appstore is installed you'll have to do the same for that. I literally just finished the process because there was one specific app I want on my tablet that I had purchased. To install from unknown sources in Android N and older, you can enable and disable the feature right from the settings panel.

It will open the settings panel where you can change all the settings related to your device. Also, you can pull down the notification bar twice, and then tap on the gear icon to open the Settings menu. Tap on that option, and it will open the security settings menu for your device. By default, the option is disabled. Turn the toggle next to the option to the ON position, and the feature will be enabled on your device. You will get the following prompt before the feature can be enabled on your device.

It mentions the risks involved with installing apps from unknown sources. The feature should now be enabled on your device, and you may now exit out of the settings menu.

Want to install the FBReader eBook app? You can grab it from the FBReader website. Silk is the default web browser that comes pre-installed on all Amazon tablets. But what you see on this screen will vary depending on the apps installed on your tablet. Tap the Silk browser if you want to be able to download Android apps from the web browser and then install them. Slide it to the right and it will change from grey to orange, indicating that you can install unknown apps.

You should be able to download and install apps now. Note that not all Android apps will necessarily work.
